“The longevity of a lucha legend and the consistency of one too.” That’s how one of our guests once described Sakura Hirota, the comedy wrestler and stalwart of the post-AJW Japanese women’s wrestling scene, who debuted in GAEA Japan 23 years ago this summer. In this episode, Luke, Connor and Tara dive into a cross-section of Hirota’s matches from GAEA and a range of other promotions, and discuss a range of topics thrown up by her work. Such topics include: comedy’s lowly status in the world of art and the joys and benefits that come with that; Hirota’s revolutionary grasp of timing and selling, and the value of novelty in pro wrestling’s crowded marketplace.
