Front Matter
We’re doing things a little differently this month. During the first lockdown of 2020, I set about translating Lulu Pencil’s pre-debut Twitter diary posts into English, to be turned into a manga series by my great friend, illustrator Anthony Hardman. The project stalled when life returned to (all but) normal, although there are still plans for a very limited print run - follow @becarefulmanga on Twitter to keep up with any news on this front.
In the meantime, I’m delighted to use this off-menu newsletter to present the first episode of Be Careful, Lulu Pencil! in full. It’s based on Lulu’s post from 27 July, 2019, in which she discusses her motivations and experiences on arriving for the first time at Ichigaya Chocolate Square. Anthony Pencil! Flupke Pencil! Lulu Pencil! And you! We are Pencil Army!
Come back tomorrow for more!
